It’s true!

Mindfulness is more than just a coping strategy or wellness practice–it actually can change the physical makeup of our brains. Researchers found that over time participants who practiced meditation and mindfulness increased the gray matter in brain regions associated with memory, learning, and focus. I hear a lot about Mindfulness, but what is it exactly?

Mindfulness is a practice I started to unknowingly learn the basics of through my martial arts training as a teenager. It involves being fully present and engaged in the current moment, aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Martial arts instilled the importance of being in the moment and having holistic awareness while practising or sparring. However, it didn’t shed light on the aspect of acknowledging the awareness of thoughts, feelings, and sensations, as these were to be left aside and not engaged. It was through the practice of meditation that I came to a fuller, more rounded understanding of mindfulness as a practice.

Rooted in ancient meditation traditions, particularly Buddhism, mindfulness has gained widespread recognition in modern psychology and wellness circles. It involves techniques such as focused breathing, body scanning, and mindful observation, which help cultivate an attentive and accepting mindset. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of oneself and the surrounding environment, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. This was exactly what it did for me as I moved from my troubled teens into adulthood.

Practising Mindfulness: What Are the Benefits?

The benefits of mindfulness are extensive and well-documented. One of the primary advantages is its ability to reduce stress. By encouraging individuals to stay present and detach from the constant stream of worries about the past and future, mindfulness helps lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. This reduction in stress not only improves mental health but also enhances physical well-being by decreasing the risk of stress-related illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease. I personally found that with regular mindfulness practice, the resulting relaxation and sense of calm enabled me to handle life’s challenges with greater resilience and composure.

In addition to reducing stress, mindfulness significantly enhances cognitive functions. Studies have shown that mindfulness can improve attention, focus, and memory. By training the mind to remain present, individuals become better equipped to concentrate on tasks and make more thoughtful decisions. This heightened awareness also translates into improved emotional regulation. My students and those who have attended my Mindfulness Workshops often report a greater ability to manage their emotions, leading to fewer instances of anxiety and depression. This emotional stability fosters a more positive outlook on life and healthier relationships with others.

I’m Lacking Purpose—Can Mindfulness Help Me Find Meaning?

Finally, mindfulness contributes to overall well-being by promoting self-awareness and personal growth. Through regular practice, individuals gain insights into their thought patterns and behaviours, which can lead to meaningful changes and self-improvement. This introspective journey often results in a deeper connection with oneself and a greater sense of purpose. Moreover, mindfulness encourages a compassionate attitude towards oneself and others, fostering empathy and kindness. As a holistic approach to health, mindfulness nurtures the mind, body, and spirit, making it an invaluable tool for enhancing the quality of life in today’s fast-paced and often stressful world.
